Geriatric Education of Emergency Medical Services – GEMS
The GEMS course is designed to address all of the special needs of the older population, including the geriatric objectives within the National Standard Curricula for EMS and for the National Registry Refresher course. The program provides basic knowledge and skills necessary to: describe the four aspects of the GEMS Diamond (geriatric, environmental, medical, social); discuss and describe the physical and social aspects of aging, independence and ageism; principles and strategies for communicating effectively with the elderly; principles for various trauma and medical emergencies; end of life care, hospice and palliative care program; assessment for abuse, documentation and reporting and who is at risk; EMS and community responsibilities for the quality of life in our older population.
