ATV AWARENESS AND OPERATIONS

This course developed by the VAVRS is designed for the Special Events Vehicle and All Terrain Vehicle for EMS and Fire use.

Description: This is an 8 hour course “Best Practices” course that includes both classroom and practical exercises. Topics include: safety, Virginia laws, preparing to ride, basic & advanced skills, and hands-on practical evolutions.

Course Hours: 8 hours

Basic Course Prerequisites: EVOC, safety equipment (helmet, gloves, safety glasses, boots) students MUST provide their own vehicle for the practical evolutions.

BASIC AND LIGHT DUTY RESCUE-RESCUE TECH LEVEL I

This course is the first step for those wishing to learn rope rescue techniques. This course is designed to teach basic rescue skills and techniques, proper use of ladders, ropes, etc., and the correct way to rescue persons from heights above or below ground.

Course Hours: 32 hours (to include day or night problem)

Basic Course Prerequisites:
· MINIMUM 16 year of age
· There are currently no course prerequisites

· MINIMUM of 18 years of age
· MUST hold current Basic & Light Duty certification
· MUST have successfully completed the Basic & Light Duty pre-test with score of 80
· MUST provide own protective gear

BASIC RESCUE TECHNICIAN

This course developed by the VAVRS is designed for the beginning rescue squad member. It was developed to introduce the squad member to a brief overview of all VAVRS courses. This will enable the squad member to be familiar with rescue equipment and just what to expect when he/she goes on rescue calls. The course which includes classroom and practical sessions will help the member develop skills for all offered VAVRS courses.

NOTE: The intent of this course is exposure to all offered VAVRS courses. It is a one time course and has no expiration date.

BASIC RESCUE TECHNICIAN II

Rescue squad members can advance to this level if:
· You are certified in Vehicle Extrication
· You are certified in Hazardous Materials First Responder Awareness
· You are certified in any other two (2) courses
· A letter from your squad Captain on squad stationary stating dates, times, and instructors who previously certified the members in the above classes.
Your certification will be forwarded upon the receipt of the above information.

Basic Rescue Technician Level II status is only valid as long as the required basic courses are valid. If your card expires in one of the above required courses, you are no longer certified as Basic Rescue Technician Level II.

CAVE RESCUE

This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of caves, search and rescue techniques, transfer and removal, protection, etc., that rescue personnel would encounter in a cave rescue.

Course Hours: 32 hours

Refresher Hours: Entire class

Basic Course Prerequisites:
· Minimum 16 years of age
· The course is physically demanding, persons taking this class should be in good physical condition

Instructor Course Prerequisites:
· MINIMUM of 18 years of age
· MUST hold current Cave Rescue certification or N.C.R.C. certification
· MUST have successfully completed the Cave Rescue pre-test with a score of 80
· MUST provide own protective gear

CONFINED SPACE RESCUE

The VAVRS facilitates this program in cooperation with the Department of Fire Programs.
This course offers classroom and practical aspects of Confined Space Rescue. The course will offer information on:
· Personal safety
· Personnel safety
· Strategy on gaining access to victim(s)
· Step by step, orderly fashion procedures to handle confined space problems
The practical portion of this course is EXTREMELY physically demanding.

Basic Course Prerequisites:
· All students will be required to show proof of certification in Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. Again, we stress this course is physically demanding. The use of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus and other basic rescue techniques are used throughout the course, specifically during practical application.

EMERGENCY VEHICLE OPERATOR COURSE (EVOC)

The Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) is patterned after the State Office of Transportation Safety EVOC guide. The course emphasizes safe driving skills. Additionally, the course gives you (the emergency driver) all the vehicle codes of Virginia which will affect you. This course is designed to help reduce the number of crashes involving emergency vehicles. The course includes classroom and driving range skills.
Upon completion of the EVOC course, five points can be added to the driver s record in the state of Virginia. This point system for your license is allowed only once every two (2) years.

Note: A textbook is required by each student taking this course

Course Hours: 16 hours

Refresher Hours: 8 hours (can include both classroom & practical)

Basic Course Prerequisites:
· MUST be 18 years of age
· MUST possess a current operators license

Instructor Course Prerequisites:
· MUST be 21 years of age
· MUST hold current EVOC certification
· MUST be certified in basic EVOC for at least one year
· MUST have successfully completed the EVOC pre-test with a score of 80
· Active squad member for three (3) years
· MUST be a member of the VAVRS
· MUST maintain a current operator's license
· MUST submit a copy of your driving record not more than 30 days old from date of application
**Any EVOC instructor who has their operators license revoked, suspended, or limited for ANY period of time, the instructor MUST IMMEDIATELY notify the VAVRS Training Officer. The instructor will IMMEDIATELY stop teaching and participating in all EVOC classes, and contests within the VAVRS, until the next Executive Committee meeting.

FARM MACHINERY EXTRICATION

This course was developed in cooperation with the VAVRS and the Virginia Tech Agricultural Engineering Department. The course stresses safe and proper techniques of handling agricultural accidents.
The course includes information and training on:
· Machinery upsets
· Victims caught within large machinery
· Grain bin entrapments
· Exposure to toxic gases
· Agricultural chemicals and pesticides
The course does include classroom and practical work.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS FIRST RESPONDER AWARENESS

This course is designed to introduce rescue personnel who may be subject to discovering, reacting to and conducting initial operations at the scene of a hazardous chemical release. Students will be trained to recognize a potentially hazardous situation and to take appropriate steps to provide for self-protection and to initiate effective response action.
The course includes classroom training only. Classroom research activities help make this a truly applicable course for possible everyday situations you the First Responder or EMT may be involved in.

HTR SCHOOL BUS RESCUE

The School Bus Rescue program was developed by the VAVRS, to give students a well rounded education in the subjects of bus construction, types of buses and stabilization techniques. It will teach students: skills and techniques of bus extrication. Emphasis is placed on:
· Orderly and efficient approach to the accident situation
· Safety procedures
· Protective equipment
· Use of tools utilized in bus environments
· Utilization of resources in the community when School Bus Rescue events occur
· Basic and Advanced Techniques for utilization in Bus Crashes
This course contains both classroom and practical portions.

Course Hours: 16 hours (4 classroom, 12 practical)

Refresher Hours:

Regular Course Prerequisites:
· Minimum 18 years of age
· MUST provide own protective gear which is to include:
· helmet (with or without shield)
· leather type work gloves
· hard sole shoes, or steeled toe boots
· turnout coat (or long sleeves)
· goggles or safety glasses
· Full Turn Out Gear is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AND ENCOURAGED
· Must have certification in HTR Vehicle Rescue
· Must be able to climb a ladder carrying 75 pounds
Instructor Course Prerequisites:
· MINIMUM of 21 years of age
· MUST hold current certification in School Bus Rescue Instructor for one (1) year
· MUST be certified in HTR Vehicle Rescue Instructor for two (2) years
· MUST have successfully completed the School Bus Rescue pre-test with a score of 80

INFECTIOUS DISEASE CONTROL

This program developed by ON GUARD, covers all OSHA rules and regulations which health care providers need to comply with. The class covers all aspects of infectious disease from bloodborne to airborne.

PADI ADVANCED OPEN WATER DIVER
The VAVRS facilitates this program in cooperation with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.
This course is designed to enhance the experience, skills, and knowledge of the diver for practical application in the diving environment.
The course is the first step beyond entry level training. It consists of five open-water training dives in which students are oriented to the following activities:
· Natural Navigation
· Compass Navigation
· Night Diving
· Deep Diving
· Search & Recovery

Basic Course Prerequisites:
· MINIMUM of 15 years of age
· MUST be certified as a PADI Open Water Diver or equivalent, or be certified as a Basic SCUBA Diver with at least 20 logged dives

· MUST provide own equipment which is to include:
- compass
- snorkel
- fins
- weight belt
- slate
- BCD with low pressure inflator
- depth gauge
- 2 tanks
- regulator with pressure guage

PADI SEARCH AND RESCUE DIVER

The VAVRS facilitates this program in cooperation with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.
This course is designed to give an experienced diver the skills to plan, organize, and carry out a recovery dive. These include:
· Hazards
· Search patterns
· Rigging and light salvage
· Line handling
· Underwater communications
· Laws and liabilities
· Search and recovery equipment

· MINIMUM of 15 years of age

SEARCH AND RESCUE

This course stresses the importance of pre-planning for search and rescue, search management, tactics, incident command and victim evacuation. Additional information will be sent to each registrant upon enrollment acceptance. Students will participate in a field search session. This program is the same program that is taught by Virginia Department of Emergency Management. The certificate issued will be a joint certification with VAVRS and VDEM

Basic Course Prerequisites:
· Minimum 16 years of age
· Students must supply own protective gear which is to include:
- walking boots or hiking type boots
- canteen
- compass
- foul weather gear (rain type gear)
- appropriate clothing
- small knap sack for weather (extra socks)
- whistle
- gloves (leather type or personal preference to ensure hand protection

Instructor Course Prerequisites:
· MINIMUM of 18 years of age
· MUST hold current Search & Rescue certification
· MUST have taken and passed the VDEM Field Team Member class
· MUST have successfully completed the Search & Rescue pre-test with a score of 80

INTRODUCTION TO SWIFT WATER

This course is designed to introduce personnel to the dangers and hazards associated with swift water rescues. Lectures and practical sessions demonstrate hazards involved and introduce the student to the gear and logistics associated with water rescue work. This course is a prerequisite to Swift Water Rescue.

SWIFT WATER RESCUE

This course is designed to give personnel of agencies, which may be involved in water rescues an understanding of the logistics, strategies, and tactics that may be employed in a rescue situation. Emphasis is placed on safety for the rescuers and hazards encountered by swift water rescuers.
Practical exercises are used to demonstrate various techniques. Successful completion of a swim test is required before the practical evolutions.

Basic Course Prerequisites:
· Good physical condition
· Average or better swimmer capable of performing a reasonably good surface dive, swim at least 250 yards fully clothed with a personal floatation device (PFD), and tread water at least 5 minutes without a PFD. STUDENTS WILL BE TESTED
· MINIMUM of 16 years of age
· MUST have completed Introduction to Swift Water Rescue within one year of enrollment
· MUST provide own equipment which is to include:
- pair of shoes that can be worn in the pond or river or wet suit booties
- wet suit
- pair of scuba fins
- water rescue helmet PFD Type III only
- pair of leather gloves

Instructor Course Prerequisites:
· MINIMUM of 18 years of age
· MUST be certified in Basic Vertical Rescue-Rescue Tech Level II or equivalent
· MUST hold current Swift Water Rescue certification
· MUST have successfully completed the Swift Water Rescue pre-test with a score of 80
· MUST provide own equipment (see above)

VEHICLE RESCUE AWARENESS

This course developed by the VAVRS, Office of EMS and Dept. of Fire Programs stresses the skills and latest techniques of vehicle extrication. Emphasis is placed on:
· Orderly and efficient approach to the accident situation
· Safety procedures
· Protective equipment
· Use of tools (hand tools, power tools, hydraulic tools, air bags, etc)
This course contains classroom portions and is appropriate for those wishing basic knowledge of the Vehicle Crash Scene and Safety Systems which could present opportunities to rescuers for injury if precautions are not taken.
*Please note: this program is not normally taught separately from the HTR Vehicle Rescue program as it is an integrated part of that program. However, if a request is made this can be a stand alone four (4) hour classroom presentation.*

· MUST be certified in basic HTR Vehicle Rescue for a minimum of two (2) years
· MUST have successfully completed the HTR Vehicle Rescue pre-test with a score of 80
· MUST provide own protective gear (see above)

VEHICLE RESCUE AWARENESS AND OPERATIONS

This course developed by the VAVRS, Office of EMS and Dept. of Fire Programs stresses the skills and latest techniques of vehicle extrication. Emphasis is placed on:
· Orderly and efficient approach to the accident situation
· Safety procedures
· Protective equipment
· Use of tools (hand tools, power tools, hydraulic tools, air bags, etc)
This course contains both classroom and practical portions.

Course Hours: 16 hours ( 4 classroom, 12 practical)

Refresher Hours:

Basic Course Prerequisites:
· Minimum 18 years of age
· MUST provide own protective gear which is to include:
-helmet (with or without shield)
-leather type work gloves
-hard sole shoes, steeled toe boots
-turnout coat (or long sleeves)
-goggles or safety glasses
**NOTE: FULL TURN OUT GEAR IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AND PREFERRED*
Instructor Course Prerequisites:
· MINIMUM of 18 years of age
· MUST hold current certification in HTR Vehicle Rescue
· MUST be certified in basic HTR Vehicle Rescue for a minimum of two (2) years
· MUST have successfully completed the HTR Vehicle Rescue pre-test with a score of 80
· MUST provide own protective gear (see above)

VERTICAL RESCUE-RESCUE TECH LEVEL II

This class is the second step after Basic & Light Duty Rescue for those wishing to learn additional rope rescue techniques. This course offers both classroom and practical aspects of vertical rescue techniques. It offers application of rescue techniques from various levels both above and below ground.
Emphasis is placed on:
· Rappelling
· Ascending
· Rappel Rescue
· Lowering Systems
· Hauling Systems
· Stretcher rigging
· All safety procedures
The course is very intense in its classroom and practical training. The practical portion is also very physically demanding.

Course Hours: 32 hours

Refresher Hours: Entire class

Basic Course Prerequisites:
· MINIMUM of 16 years of age
· MUST be certified in Basic & Light Duty Rescue basic within last 2 years
· Candidate must do pretest and successfully tie pre-selected knots
· MUST provide own protective gear which is to include:
- helmet (bike riding syle)
- gloves (type without fingers but provide protection for rest of hand)
- appropriate clothing (no loose clothing or jewelry)

Instructor Course Requirements:
· MINIMUM of 18 years of age
· MUST hold current certification in Vertical Rescue basic
· MUST be certified as a Basic & Light Duty Rescue Instructor
· MUST have successfully completed the Vertical Rescue pre-test with a score of 80
· MUST provide own protective gear (see above)

ADVANCED VERTICAL RESCUE-RESCUE TECH LEVEL III

This is the third step after Vertical Rescue for those wishing to learn Advanced Vertical Rescue techniques. This course will include hauling and lowering systems, for high angle rescues.
This course is very intense in its classroom and practical training. The practical portion is also very physically demanding.

Course Hours: 24 hours

Refresher Hours: Entire class

Basic Course Prerequisites:
· MINIMUM of 16 years of age
· MUST provide own protective gear (see Vertical Rescue)
· MUST be certified in Basic & Light Duty Rescue or Basic & Light Duty Rescue-Rescue Tech Level I
· MUST be certified in Vertical Rescue or Vertical Rescue-Rescue Tech II that is 2 years old or less
· Candidate must do pretest and successfully tie pre-selected knots and ability to configure anchor systems.

Instructor Course Prerequisites:
· MINIMUM of 18 years of age
· MUST provide own protective gear (see above)
· MUST be certified as a Basic & Light Duty Instructor
· MUST be certified as a Vertical Rescue Instructor
· MUST be certified in Advanced Vertical Rescue-Rescue Tech Level III basic
· MUST have successfully completed the Advanced Vertical Rescue pre-test with a score of 80
